National Apprenticeship Week 2025: Insights into the building inspection apprenticeship journey with Alex Clements
14th February 2025

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, and at Assent, we want to highlight the impact apprenticeships have on the building control industry; bridging the skills gap, ensuring regulatory competency, and developing the next generation of surveyors.

We recently sat down with Alex Clements, an Apprentice Registered Building Inspector at Assent Building Compliance, to discuss his experience and the opportunities offered through apprenticeships in building control and compliance. Here’s what he had to say about his career path, the apprenticeship process, and his aspirations for the future.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to pursue a career in building control?

A: I’ve always had an interest in construction, and I wanted to explore what opportunities existed within the building industry. Building inspection stood out to me because it combines technical knowledge with the chance to go on-site. It’s a hybrid job, allowing me to be hands-on while ensuring that buildings are safe and compliant. I love the variety, it’s not the same thing every day, which keeps things interesting.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you as an apprentice building inspector?

A: A typical day involves heading out to site for inspections, which can range from small residential projects to larger commercial developments. Sometimes I work independently, and other times alongside a mentor. We start by checking plans to ensure they meet regulations before carrying out inspections. There’s a good mix of site work and paperwork, making the role really varied.

Q: How has your training and support been during your apprenticeship?

A: Assent provides company-wide training several times a month. This covers everything from internal procedures to updates in building regulations. On a more personal level, I have a mentor who provides support and feedback on a daily basis. They’re there to guide me through the day-to-day tasks and offer advice whenever needed.

Q: How has your understanding of building regulations and compliance evolved since starting the apprenticeship?

A: My understanding has grown significantly, and it’s been a major step forward in building my knowledge. I feel much more confident in navigating compliance standards. It’s a highly technical field, but I’m constantly learning and developing my skills, which is really rewarding.

Q: Do you think apprenticeships are important for helping young people break into the industry?

A: Absolutely. Apprenticeships offer a perfect balance of practical experience and theoretical knowledge. You’re learning hands-on from day one, while also gaining the educational background through university. Plus, you get paid while you’re learning, which is a huge benefit. It’s a great way to build a future in the industry.

Q: Why do you think apprenticeships are important for the future of construction and building compliance?

A: Building compliance is a niche sector, and not many people know about it. Apprenticeships are crucial because they allow individuals to be trained by experienced professionals from day one. Without the apprenticeship route, it’s difficult to get into the industry since many people don’t know what building compliance is. Apprenticeships help fill this gap by offering practical experience alongside academic learning.

Q: Do you have to do an apprenticeship alongside your degree to work in building inspection?

A: You don’t have to do an apprenticeship alongside a degree, but most people choose that route because the apprenticeship gives you real-world experience. You can complete a degree separately, but the apprenticeship provides the hands-on learning that helps you truly understand the industry.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in building inspection?

A: I would say, be open-minded and proactive in your learning. Ask lots of questions and take every opportunity to learn from those who know the industry best. The amount of growth you experience in a short period is incredible. It’s a different kind of learning compared to a traditional degree, and the practical experience you gain is invaluable.

Q: What are your career goals after completing your university degree and apprenticeship?

A: After completing my degree, I plan to continue progressing within the building control sector. There are now more opportunities to qualify and advance while still in the apprenticeship, which means I can reach milestones along the way rather than just looking at the end of the apprenticeship as the end of my learning opportunities. I hope to stay in building inspection, complete my degree, and work my way up in the industry.

Q: Do you think apprenticeships are a valuable route into the industry?

A: Definitely. I think the hands-on experience and training provided in apprenticeships is essential to gaining a deep understanding of the industry. For someone looking to break into building control, it’s the best way to go, as it combines both the theoretical and practical elements of the job.
